PostSubject: What story should I choose for my next game?   Thu Jan 28, 2010 1:43 pm

I'd value your opinion here! I'm making agame based on classic stories, and I can't decide which one to do next. This is what I need:
1. A classic, out of copyright story ('cause that's what the game is about)
2. It has to be well known, and well liked (because I want to sell them!)
3. It has to connect with either southern England or France (because I want it to closely connect with existing games)
4. I want something that already feels like an adventure (because my previous games have been a bit philosophical. I want more fun!)

I've made a poll of the short list. Any preferences?

Hi Chris!

First, congratulations on the release Genesis of the Gods and the completion (?), of the Peri trilogy. I'm playing Les Miserables with my son at the moment. Smile

Out of those I, too, would go for Dracula. It would be good to see a true depiction of the original story. Might be tricky though. The way the novel flits somewhat from one character's part in the story to the other. It would be excellent, I'm sure.

Other possibilities. How about Dumas' Musketeers, Doyle's The Lost World, Dr Jeckyll and Mr Hyde, or Chesterton's excellent anarchist thriller, The Man Who Was Thursday? All of those would work, I think.

All of those connect with either England or France, and each, including the Man Who Was Thursday, have some very exciting and thrilling passages.

Thanks for the suggestions!

BTW, if anyone is playing the existing games and has any feedback, I'm always open for suggestions. My goal is for games that are like "monkey Island but with a heavyweight story" but I think I still have a way to go. Smile

Hello Tolworthy

Thank you for asking our opinion but please spare us any more Dracula games. Don't we have enough of these already? How about something different and fresh Like King Solomons Mines or War of the Worlds.

Is it possible to get a few links to your other games.

Nothing wrong with Dracula but don't you yearn for a new, amazing adventure. Something you weren't expecting and spontaneous like when you played Syberia for the first time? Too many story plots have been done over and over and become boring. Haven't we already played enough games like Dracula, Egypt and Sherlock Holmes etc? Give me a brand new and exciting adventure to get lost in so I can have that feeling again. Maybe its just that I have been playing these games so long that I feel like this. Cool

Hmmm... Ya, I haven't felt that Syberia type feeling in a very long time! You have a point there.
How many games have you played in your lifetime? Over 100?

I agree with Greyfuss. That's why I selected King Solomon's Mines....a real adventure! Alan Quartermain! What better to depict in an adventure game!

Dracula has been done over and over by the gaming community.

What mysteries can we think of that could be done? scratch

How about "The Thirty-Nine Steps?" I recall the original movie (Hitchcock) and then a remake that kept me glued to my seat even though I knew the ending. Lots of locations and intrigue.

The only thing I remember about She is Ursula Andress. Hard to believe that movie is 45 years old

SHE who must be obeyed! ...SHE who must be loved! ...SHE who must be possessed!

Hi tolworthy

Thanks for asking us for our opinion.

I think She, King Solomons Mines and Three Muskateers would all be good. I would like to see The Count of Monte Christo as a game. It is an excellent adventure story. Or maybe something like Gaslight ? That was a book also wasn't it scratch

Does anyone think these could be good for an adventure game for Tolworthy? I don't know if they are out of copyrights but might have fun stories to put to a game...

Tom Sawyer - Mark Twain
Adventures of Huckleberry Finn - Mark Twain
Lost World - Arthur Conan Doyle
Lost Continent - Edgar Rice Burroughs
The Time Machine - H. G. Wells

Seven Voyages of Sinbad - can't remember who originally wrote it

They all sound great! The Time Machine is definitely on the books - it's one of my all time favorite books. Sinbad was part of the Arabian Nights, and my original plan was to do an Arabian Nights game, but I think it makes more sense to do the more famous stories separately. Sinbad and Aladdin are definites for some time in the future. The only question is, should I bring them forward? Of all the classic novels in the world, those are the closest in style to regular adventure games.

The only one I'm not sure about is the Lost Continent. Simply for copyright reasons. It is technically out of copyright, but the Edgar Rice Crispies estate is well known for being litigious, though mainly with Tarzan and John Carter. Maybe the Lost Continent would be safe - I'd have to check.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I mentioned The Lost World earlier as well. I think it would be excellent. Whose faces would you have on the dinosaurs though? Laughing

I really didn't read all of these books it was the movies that blew me away.

I guess I didn't mean the Seven Voyages of Sinbad as much as I meant the Seventh Voyage of Sinbad as depicted in the move The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad

The Lost Continent would be great if possible. Lost Worlds would be good too. The Arabian Nights stories would make great Adventure games. How about Rebbeca or Jamaica Inn.

They'd make fantastic games. Unfortunately, Daphne du Maurier was extremely inconsiderate in living to a grand old age, and so her books will all be in copyright for many years to come. But if I ever get rich I could try and buy the rights. Smile

I second The Count of Monte Cristo! But the unabridged version is 1200-1400 pages, depending on which publishing house you prefer. So it might be most difficult to cram all of the action! The drama! The scheming and dialog! Into a video game.

Best of luck to you in whatever you choose!
