The 13th Doll: A fan game of The 7th Guest

Hi all,

This is both an introduction and an announcement.  I am a member of Attic Door Productions, the team behind The 13th Doll.  The 13th Doll is a fan game whose production dates back 10 years!  We've had ups and downs and everything in-between.

The 7th Guest and The 11th Hour were two games that were revolutionary for their time.  The 7th Guest was a pioneer in CD game technologies and with the use of Full Motion Video.  It was a leader in a brand new world of gaming.  Hey, let's face it, the game was tons of fun and had a level of intrigue which many games, even today, cannot match.

In 2006, a group of people got together and said, "Hey, these were awesome games, there is no 3rd one in sight, let's make a fan game of this", and that was how Attic Door Productions and The 13th Doll were born.

In many ways The 13th Doll is true to the original.  There are 26 puzzles, multiple endings, 50+ new and atmospheric music tracks, oh, and we are hoping to get Stauf himself, Robert Hirschboeck back as well!  The game is also different, there will be 1st-person free-reign movement through the house, the graphics are at HD level, and the game is built in Unity.

In many ways The 13th Doll is an amazing and historic achievement by and for fans.  This is not simply due to the nature of the game and its scope, but also because we have the backing of the original license holders!  The 13th Doll is a fully licensed fan game, something nearly unheard of!  How amazing is that!?  So, we were able to launch a Kickstarter Project which will hopefully enable us to make this game even better AND finally get it done by the beginning of next year!  A game by and for the fans WITH the backing of the IP Holder!

We are extremely excited about this whole situation because we have worked so hard over the years on this project and never dreamed things would come to this epoch.  It really is the return to the Stauf mansion that the fans always wanted, and now, hopefully because of fans like you and forums like this, it will become a reality.

We will be here if you have any questions about the game, its history, or just to chat about classic gaming from the 90s.  That isn't to say we don't like certain modern games too but, at the moment, classic is clearly our thing.

This is indeed excellent news. To have their backing and endorsement is wonderful. Did this happen early on or after seeing how much work you and your colleagues had done on the game thus far ?
Do you have any anticipation of the game being boxed retail as well as download ?
I ask this because I'm sure fans of the games will want a boxed collector's copy some time down the line.
Also, and finally, for now, are you getting purely permission and verbal/written endorsement from the rights holders, or are they helping you out with some financial backing too ? It would be very nice if they did. After all, you are rekindling passion for the original games, as well as for your own, The 13th Doll.

Actually, we started this project a long time ago - back in 2004! We made great progress on it, but it was too ambitious for an all volunteer project, so gradually, it lost its legs, and we moved on to other projects. We realized how much we missed it this spring, and picked it back up again. Trilobyte, the makers of the original game, noticed us then, and offered us the licensing deal, which is an incredible turn of events. We're really happy to be at this point!

So, we do have their written permission to complete our game. A few people from their group have backed the kickstarter, but really, we're two separate entities, and this is our game to fund and create

In our rewards section, there is the option for a boxed copy. We may have priced it a little too high tho, so we'll be rethinking our plans there.

We just broke 50% funded tonight!  We've only had the KS going since Sunday afternoon with official launch on Monday.

Can't wait for 13th Doll!

Some of my fondest gaming memories growing up was figuring out 7th Guest and 11th Hour with a friend. We would literally stay up all night trying to figure out some of those puzzles. I remember that one puzzle in 11th Hour where one had to move furniture around to get something out, a classic take on the sliding block puzzle. Man that thing took us a loooon time to figure out.
