What's the origin of your username, and why did you choose it?

Be prepared, and take a deep breath! Here's my story . . . .

Gelert is the name I'm very proud to take because it is a name deeply rooted in the history, legends and folk tales of my country. There is an old Welsh tale (which may well be very true - nobody knows for sure), about a Prince called LLywelyn (a Prince who really existed). I will relate to you the tale . . . . if a somewhat abbreviated version of it.

Prince LLywelyn had a faithful hound called Gelert, and LLywelyn and his wife had a baby son and they lived in a beautiful castle. One day LLywelyn was away on a journey and he left Gelert to stand guard in the castle to protect his baby. The baby was in a crib in a room which had also a big chair. When LLywelyn was away a wolf came into the castle and into the room where the baby was sleeping in the crib. The wolf was trying to attack the baby and kill the baby, but Gelert saw the wolf and, although the wolf was much bigger than Gelert and much stronger, Gelert attacked it and fought it. Gelert succeeded in killing the wolf, but Gelert was badly injured and was covered in his own blood and blood from the wolf. Unfortunately the crib was knocked over and the baby fell to the floor under the upturned crib.

When LLywelyn returned from his journey he came through the castle gate and saw Gelert coming towards him to greet his master. It was as much as Gelert could do to walk with his injured body to greet his master. When LLywelyn saw the blood on Gelert's body and the blood dripping from his mouth, LLywelyn thought that something terrible had happened to the baby. He ran into the room brandishing his sword, and saw the crib upturned on the floor, and with no sight of his baby child. He was full of fear and rage and thinking that Gelert, his beloved hound, had killed and eaten his baby child, he took his sword and plunged it into Gelert's heart. Gelert lay dead.

As he crouched next to Gelert sobbing for his lost child he heard a noise coming from under the crib. He moved the broken crib and saw his little child happy and smiling. The baby child had been saved by Gelert who had knocked over the crib to try to protect the baby from the attack by the wolf. LLywelyn was shocked but very relieved and, as he held his little child and walked across the room he saw, behind the big chair, the dead and battered body of the great big, ugly wolf that Gelert, his faithful hound, had so bravely slain in order to save his master's little baby child. LLywelyn knelt down and cried with sadness for the loss of his faithful Gelert, and for the madness of the cruel deed which he had done in killing his friend.

There is a place in the north of my country called Bedd Gelert. It is a small town. It's pretty, but not a particularly beautiful town. But it's a very old town. In the town there is a place where it is said that LLywelyn lay to rest his faithful friend in a simple burial grave. 'Bedd' (pronounced in the Welsh way of speaking 'Baeth'), means, in English, 'grave', and the story tells us that, until the day that Prince LLywelyn died, every year, on the anniversary of the day that Gelert died, LLywelyn came back to the the burial place to visit and weep over his loyal friend's grave.

I'm not certain exactly how much of this story is true, but I know that nearly all of it IS true. It's a beautiful, and very sad, story, but it's one that I always remember. Gelert ............... the faithful hound.

I'm Welsh Live in a town called barmouth (Abermaw in Welsh :p) in north wales

Anyway mine is kind of primitive, Im named Idris, and I play guitar.

I started using the username when I was about 11, so I kind of just stick to the habit, even though now it kind of comes off as self gratifying, but i guess i just stick to old habits (mainly so I dont forget what my username or password is )

Winfrey is my beloved Cairn Terrier--- and to go one step further--- guess who Winfrey is named after

I love watching birds, and the feisty little American kestrel, also known as a sparrow hawk (really a falcon), was always fun to spot hovering over fields like a kingfisher over water. When my husband first went online on MacBoards, he called himself Redhawk34, one of his call signs in Vietnam. During a post he referred to me as his Lady Kestrel, so I started using it when I joined the site and have used it ever since.

I think that mine might be the easiest one to figure out...well at least those who live in the USA, heh.

lakerz = LA Lakers, my favorite basketball team in the NBA. Living in Los Angeles, November through June is my favorite time of year.

I was always interested in Ancient Egptian history so when I went to college I took all the courses that they offered on ancient history. The Professor that taught the ancient history courses had the habit of nicknaming his students. So it was my old college professor who gave me the nickname hatshepsut. It kind of stuck with me through the years, probaly because of my fasination with the Pharaoh. So when I started joining forums it just seemed natural to use hatshepsut for my username.

Btw lots of good stories behind the usernames.

Mine is another obvious one. I have always loved mysteries. Whether they are games, or movies, or tv shows... there's nothing like a good mystery just begging to be solved! In every forum I've ever been in, my name was different but the idea was always the same.
( I need a smiley with like a Sherlock hat or something! Lol! )

Okay... Mine is simple. My initials...and I live in a very scary place.

The cat you see on my left is my sweet baby Autumn, who passed away last year. She loved Catnip. At the first adventure forum where I posted, I was Bryansmom. But when I left there, I decided to change my name, because he didn't really like having his name plastered everywhere by that time. So, I chose Catnip. I had been posting as a variant of that name (Catniptoy) elsewhere where I transcribed live feeds for Big Brother, so I just shortened it to Catnip, which is usually how I signed my name, anyway. (Catniptoy was because the computer was/is my catnip toy).

You transcribed the live feeds for Big Brother? cool!
Okay, don't laugh at me, but I've never had any pets. Can you tell me what is in catnip? I know cats love it, but why?
