True Grit Empty
PostSubject: True Grit   True Grit EmptyWed Feb 02, 2011 7:56 pm

I was down the local real ale hostelry last Friday and we were asking each other a few trivia questions - mostly football (real football!).

Something had occurred to me earlier in the week when I heard that Jeff Bridges was one of the nominees for best actor, at the Oscars, for the 'True Grit' remake.

The question is, and it's plagued me since, . . . . Has there ever before been an instance when the lead actor in a remake movie has won Best Actor Oscar, repeating the feat of the original lead actor (in this case the fantastic John Wayne)? scratch

We couldn't think of one. Anyone know? Surely this question must be 'doing the rounds' on movie forums. Smile

Gelert since the beginning of the Academies 4 remake of movies have had best actor nomination with the actor winning:

1. Goodbye Mr. Chips ( 1939) - Robert Donat (won) - (1963) Peter O'Toole (didn't win)

2. Pygmalion(1938) Leslie Howard (didn't win) - My Fair Lady -(1964) Rex Harrison (won) ( Wendy Hiller was nominated for the best actress 1938 Pygmalion and won )

3. Cyrano de Bergerac (1950) - Jose Ferrer (won) - (1990) Gerard Depardieu (didn't win)

4. True Grit (1969) - John Wayne (won) - 2010) - Jeff Bridges (?)

There are 4 other remakes of movies that have had best actors nominated but did not win. One of them 'A Star is Born' had the best actor and actor for nomination in 1937 and 1954.

Hi hats. Thanks for that. From what I see you've written it's never happened then?

That the best actor Oscar has been won for the original and the remake??

If 'True Grit' does it, it will be the first time. Am I reading that correctly?

Yes Gelert that is correct. The best actor/ actress has never been won for both the original and remake. Perhaps this year it will Smile
