You don't have to say a consonant first.
You get to guess the game at the same time as you guess a CORRECT letter. BUT . . . . If your letter guess is wrong the game carries on and I won't say if your game guess was correct.
BUT ................. If you guess the game wrongly, you're OUT of that particular game.

But if you guess the letter wrong, the game can't be correct, can it?

If it was allowed, you could guess a wrong letter because you want to score as many points as possible. The more spaces left, the more points you get. So, you must get a letter correct for your game guess to count.
