"High in the Himalayas", reads an old and dusty manuscript, "there lies a well hidden mountain pass through which few have ventured and none have returned.". If the stories of local clans are to be believed, and who are we to dispute such tales, a strange and mythical land lies far beyond the mountain pass. A land of sunshine, flowers and gurgling mountain streams. Where the natural beauty of the landscape prevails as nature intended. A land where people live in peace and contentment ...... and are blessed with eternal youth.".

Only recently, it has come to the attention of learned academics that a certain reclusive, and somewhat eccentric old Oxford college professor, through his studies of ciphers and antiquated relics of Himalayan tribes of bygone ages, has discovered a series of coded terms, or phrases, that may yet provide a solution as to the route through the until now impenetrable mountain pass. Professor Gelert (no relation to myself), is quoted as saying that the secret to finding a route and reaching the mythical Lost Horizon appears to entail solving at least 10 of the 30 hidden 'phrases' or names within the series of trials.

Professor Gelert is reported to have said " . . . . that to afford oneself the opportunity of traversing the pass, one must not only solve 10, or more, of the coded texts, but that this would then be followed by one of the local Shaman making a random selection of just ONE fortunate Adventurer who would then be 'The Chosen One', and he, or she, would be given unfettered access to the Lost Horizon and all its wonders.".

As a special incentive to would be Adventurers the Shaman has informed Professor Gelert that, not only will any person solving 10, or more, of the codes have a chance of succeeding in his, or her, quest, by random selection by the Shaman, but that the persons that solve 20, or more, of the codes will be entered TWICE into the random selection drawing, and the persons that achieve the best THREE 'scores' in the coded trials will be entered THREE TIMES into the random selection. In this way the top three persons will have THREE times the chance of success.

Professor Gelert has been asked by some of his students to explain the process in a more clear and simple manner. This is what he says.

"Get just 10 or more of the coded phrases, or names, correct and you will be entered into a drawing.

Get twenty or more, correct and your name will be entered twice into the drawing.

If you have one of the best three scores, your name will be entered into the drawing THREE times.

The trials are not easy, but some are far easier than they look.

Clues are included, as is the odd word from the answer here and there.

The trials are to be completed, and all submissions to Gelert rendered, by midnight (UK time), November 5th (the night known as Guy Fawkes night in the UK).

Gelert's adjudications and decisions are final.
